Frequently Asked Questions

When should my child first see the dentist?+
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends a child's first dental visit by age 1, or within six months of the first tooth appearing — whichever comes first. Early visits help build a positive relationship with the dentist, let us catch concerns early, and give parents guidance on home care, thumb-sucking, and bottle habits. The first visit is short, friendly, and focused on making your child feel comfortable.
How do you handle anxious or first-time young patients?+
Our team is trained to make every visit calm and positive for kids. We use a gentle, age-appropriate approach — explaining each step with simple language, showing the tools, and giving the child time to ask questions. For nervous children, we use a tell-show-do technique that builds trust gradually. The goal of an early visit isn't a perfect cleaning — it's helping your child feel safe in the dental chair so they grow up at ease with dental care.
Is dental sedation safe for kids?+
When used appropriately by a trained provider, dental sedation is safe and routinely used in pediatric dentistry. We use minimal sedation options — most commonly nitrous oxide (laughing gas) — which wears off within minutes and leaves no lingering effects. Before any sedation, we carefully review your child's medical history and discuss whether sedation is the right choice. Many kids never need it; it's available for those who would benefit from extra support.
Are dental X-rays safe for children?+
Yes. Modern digital X-rays use very low radiation — significantly less than older film-based X-rays. Dallas Dentique uses lead aprons and thyroid collars for additional protection during every X-ray. We only take X-rays when clinically necessary, typically every 6-12 months depending on your child's age and risk factors. Catching cavities and developmental concerns early — when they're easier to treat — is the goal.
How often should kids see the dentist?+
Most children should visit the dentist every 6 months for a routine cleaning and exam. Children with a higher risk of cavities or specific orthodontic concerns may benefit from more frequent visits — we'll recommend a schedule based on your child's individual needs. Regular preventive visits are the single most effective way to avoid cavities, catch concerns early, and build lifelong dental habits.
At what age should children start seeing an orthodontist?+
The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an orthodontic evaluation by age 7. By this age, the first permanent molars and incisors have come in, allowing us to identify any early concerns with bite alignment, jaw growth, or tooth crowding. Many kids won't need treatment at age 7 — but early evaluation lets us plan ahead and intervene at the most effective time if needed.
